[edit] Can I write the “Mini Articles” in any language?

I have a question: Can I write the “Mini Articles” in any language? This is not a provocation. I want to help. I do not want be a troll. Alvaro I 10:08, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Of course, you can. And categorize in Category:Content by language. Regards Emijrp 10:11, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Is it possible that a german user only sees the german content?

Is it possible to write multilanguage-mini-pages, so that a german user only sees the german content? XmoeX 13:43, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Ja, das geht:
Interlanguage links only work, if you name a page exactly as the original English page plus adding the ISO-code after a slash – eg. /es – to that page title (codes are well known from Wikipedia, see also ISO 639).
Example: Search Wikia > Search Wikia/es – you'll find es:Search Wikia and en:Search Wikia at the bottom of these pages.
Look at the main page and its translations to learn how it is done. --Glg 18:39, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Template for french articles

Here is an (very basic) template for Mini articles in French:

English title/fr

Content of french mini article

<div style="float:right; padding-left:1em; vertical-align:top; width:150px; border:dotted 1px; color:#333333;">

Traductions:

* Anglais (English)

</div>

en:English title

[edit] Template for english articles

And on the English version:

English title

Content of english miniarticle

<div style="float:right; padding-left:1em; vertical-align:top; width:150px; border:dotted 1px; color:#333333;">

Traductions:

* French (Français)

</div>

fr:English title

An example can be seen here(fr) and here(en)

[edit] little correction

shouldn't we use "translations" insetead of "traductions" in the english articel?

Fixed it. --Rainer 18:53, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Categories and language

If we use also the categorie of the Minis to search we should categories them well. I did a little bit in German language. I made a categorie Minis/de and than serveral other subcategories. There you will find only Mini-articles in German. Or some with German and English in one article. Than I made an categorie disambiguations there I try to put in multilingual diambiguation articles. For browsing from one Mini-article to another I used this title --Simone 05:19, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

I think it's useful.--jeanpol 06:00, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
I still think we should keep using the categories under Category:Content_by_language since that is what everyone has been using from day one. I mean, it seems to be the place to categorize by language "by definition" ;-) If we change things now to adapt to this new pattern not only we'd have to fix everything already done but also teach users to start using this, and I really don't see any significative advantages over the old Category:Content_by_language way to justificate it. Also, since we don't have a final word on how things will be done yet, seems to be enough to have one and only one way to try to separate the articles by language so that they can run an update in the database when the time comes. [edit] Interlanguage Links

[edit] important notice

Please use en:Mini:article title instead of en:article title or otherwise you'll not be linked to the correct article.

[edit] Interlanguage links to non-english articles

For interlanguage links to non-english languages, the resulting link will lead to "Mini:article title/language code". However, for non-english search queries (article titles), the "Mini:search query" article should be in the search query's (article title's) language. For example, take the query "Suchmaschine". "Suchmaschine" is a german word and means "search engine". Mini:Suchmaschine is therefore in German. In this case, the interlanguage link on "Mini:search engine" should thus point to "Mini:Suchmaschine", and not to "Mini:Suchmaschine/de", which it in fact does.

To make this transparent to the readers, we should make such interlanguage target pages redirect to the desired one. In the example, "Mini:Suchmaschine/de" should redirect to "Mini:Suchmaschine" (and it now does). This redirection must currently be added manually (in the example by putting "#REDIRECT Mini:Suchmaschine" into "Mini:Suchmaschine/de").

When mini articles are tagged with languages, this could be at least partially automated. --Rainer 11:07, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Layout Problems with Interwiki Links

When there is also a link to another Wiki (e.g. Wikipedia) and the Mini is very short, the translation box is positioned left from the Wiki link (because of the float). I'm trying to correct this by inserting a div with clear:both. It's not perfect, but it is workin. Also I prefer to take em instead of px (scalable). Example:

Item mini text to the item Article

<div style="clear: both; border:solid 0px; color:#ffffff;"></div>
<div style="float: right; padding-left: 1em; vertical-align:top; width:12em; border:dotted 1px; color:#333333;">
Translations:
* German (Deutsch)
</div>

de:Mini:Item

and it looks like the following...

Item
mini text to the item Article

[edit] Language- or country-specific topics

For instance mini articles about a country. ATM there are both Mini:Deutschland (with German and English content) and Mini:Germany (with English content only) (Deutschland is German for Germany ;-) ). Now, according to "English title/fr" (see above), the articles would actually have to be named "Germany" and "Germany/de". Is this desirable? I mean, in my opinion the article should be called Deutschland because this is national language. Will somehthing like this be realized with redirects? --Angus Richard Finnson 17:06, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

In your example, Mini:Deutschland should be in german, with interlanguage links like, for example, en:Mini:Germany and fr:Mini:Allemagne.
The link to en:Mini:Germany should work (lead to Mini:Germany) without further action. This is because en: Links are treated specially.
The link to fr:Mini:Allemagne will lead to Mini:Allemagne/fr. By the way, this "link translation" may not work for all languages. However, the user should really be directed to Mini:Allemagne, which is in french, as it should be, since it is a uniquely french word. An appropriate redirect from Mini:Allemagne/fr to Mini:Allemagne currently needs to be added manually (using #REDIRECT [[]]).
In general, and for another example, see #Interlanguage_links_to_non-english_articles. --Rainer 19:15, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
