[edit] Wikiasari, or not?

  • Before Nintendo called its new system the Wii, it was called the Revolution and was a very popular and catchy name with the public and the media. Pretty soon everyone forgot it was called the Revolution and the Wii name was taken favourably. Even though it is not a perfect analogy, Wikiasari's name should be changed because as long as we could find a good name, those 2 million people who were interested enough to google hit would find out the name change very quickly anyway and bring another wave of interested people in from a scatter of bonus media attention just because of a name change. Ertangos 04:16, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
  • we´re now at 2 million google Hits for "Wikiasari" Keep it.. i think the world expect that project with that name.. any other new name now would lead to speculations and would confuse any user around.
  • The confusion is all these damn names with wiki. As I explained below there are only a handfull of premium domains available. 9500 wiki related domains registered (domain surfer). I sure would hate to launch such a project with a crowded field of 9500 wiki's spelled domains. Better get some branding counseling at alries.com. Reputations are on the line here. MyLocator.com
  • Wow! Another project from the Wiki guys! Wikipedia is my knowledge source & I sure do look forward to the search engine. But Wikiasari? Please DO NOT use that name. I hated it from the first time I read it. Use something which is easy to spell, remember & fun to say, just like Wikipedia. Also try to omit that "a" after "Wiki" in the future name. I am sure people will come up with some really fantastic names. Thanks & Good Luck! People Rule!
  • Good luck with the project, it´s sorely needed. One suggestion: Change the name, Wikiasari sounds awful and seems easy to mis-spell. Go simple, Wikisearch,Wikiweb or something similar. --85.86.209.242 13:38, 26. Dec 2006 (UTC)
  • In the name of... The brandname is so important to guide people to the search engine, therefore this name wiki..etc, i can't still remember the name, is wrong. Change it so s.a.p. --217.136.137.93 13:57, 26. Dec 2006 (UTC)
  • The name alone will kill the project. Well, one may argue that function is the substance that drives the Internet. Go tell that to MSN, Ask Jeeves etc. Any name that leads to so many mis spells in asking for trouble. The rest, only time will tell... --71.247.83.18 21:38, 26. Dec 2006 (UTC)
Note: Wikiasari was used for a search project in the past, see the history of this project. But it is not the current name of it now. Actually, the forthcoming search engine project is still without a name. Just this site has a name at the moment: Search Wikia :-) --rieke 22:06, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
  • The project needs a name. Period. -- Madkidd 18:00, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
  • First of all good luck for your project! my best wishes for that. i like wikiasari as name it sounds special and different. please not another "search" "find" or whatever. "asari" sounds unique and mysterious. but whatever the name will be, i´m sure it will be a success as wikipedia was one. All big online/offline media companies refer to the project as "wikiasari". maybe thats a point too. these thousands of reports in blogs, news-pages etc. already branded the name --80.136.161.242 11:01, 27. Dec 2006 (UTC)
  • Indeed that was a big branding opportunity and it is lost now. All major media companys refered to the project as "wikiasari" and that name has already over 1 million google hits http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=wikiasari Stick to the name.. might be the best. --80.136.161.242 12:07, 27. Dec 2006 (UTC)

I think something short and easy to type-in and recall instantly is what must be used, I can provide the domain http://www.A1W.com it's perfect and brandable and stands for "A1 Wiki" it's world recognized as being the best quality or service (or web search in this case), and it's A1 followed by the "W" for "Wiki" of course! A1W.com would lead this project into certain success!

But then comes http://www.a1.net/ building a wiki and run into troubles. Hmm, so what - why don't take "wikiasari" and make it easier speakable: name it just "Sari".
Note: I don't want to buy a domain from a domain-grabber, so even sari might be no good idea.
MovGP0 11:16, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
  • I know Wikiasari is not the name of this project, but I just wanted to point out that "asari" in Japanese, while meaning a rummaging search, has mostly negative connotations of fishing in garbage bins and thieving--obviously unfortunate images to associate with a new search engine. I'm glad the name's not being used :) Cheers, Tangotango 06:25, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

I don't have an idea for a good name, but I have a suggestion for you, think of something catchy and which can become something of common use "google for it" "i found it googl'ing", "i've dugg it", etc.

wikiasari of course it's not good in this sense; name should end with a consonantic sound, so that it can be used as a verb :P seems stupid, but it may help :)

NoWhereMan --84.221.97.153 15:13, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WikiLocator.com

Common sense, keyphrase, top level, no instructions required, built in branding. Considered one of the top 4 domains of 9500 domains with "wiki" contained(domainsurfer). The best "Location Based" Search Engine Name with Wiki contained. Any other name would just add to the current confusion of wiki related properties.

[edit] Wikisik

I think the name is straight forward and clean, establishes it as a wiki product and sounds relevant to its purpose (wiki-seek). Using the search engine would be wikisiking (wiki-seeking). Ertangos 07:13, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wiikle

Everybody knows how "to Google", so everybody will know easily how "to wiikle" for something. The target is better than Google but with a wiki idea inside. This name is self explanatory and the easier to remember. --195.210.65.28 09:16, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WISE

I like WISE. How about after a Greek deity of Wisdom, like: Athena, Odin or Minerva? Hitwill 01:58, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

I like it too by juggler3 81.174.16.249 08:41, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

No, to many name colissions. Ask google for WISE - there are already a hell lot projects called like this. MovGP0 10:30, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

I like Athina. But Odin was not Greek.  ;)

Oh, I've forgot: Minerva is already a search engine... — MovGP0

wws.wiki.com

I agree - get a sticky wiki name - "can't find the server at wws.wiki.com"

searchwikia.com - already owned - parked at Sedo.com

WWS (Wiki Web Search) sounds good. Can we set up a voting poll? This IS a HUMAN project ... no?

--Stevestuff 00:44, 28. Dec 2006 (UTC)

So I like it too. They are my ideas

juggler3 08:50, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WikiaSearch

Hi, My name is (The Buddha) and I propose WikiaSearch as the name. Even though it is 2 words, it effectively ties Wikia with search and will not so much remind but constantly reinforce users that it is search, search and nothing but search. This alone will add usability to the site in ways Yahoo or MSN cannot as those venues mean so many different things to different people. A singular function tied with the word - search, will leave no doubt what Wikia is. It is Wikia Search. 71.247.83.18 09:45, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

This might be a bit confusing as there is another project already named Wikisearch. --rieke 19:11, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] SeeWiki

I am searching something , I SeeWiki , I find the best answer .

In french "Siwiki" is easy to pronounce ;-)

--82.227.57.60 21:39, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] SWiki

I like it but drop the first "i" easier to pronounce and remember ********** Swiki ********** --Kbotley 05:25, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Yes , *** Swiki *** is more nice , "Swiki" is good in french too .

-User:82.227.57.60 12H00 , 29 December 2006 (UTC)

There is a naming collision with SushiWiki (also called "swiki"). Do not use. MovGP0 10:31, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WIKIsearch

I've added WIKIsearch - I know it's similar to wikiasearch - just one letter different but I have to be honest that having read the bbc news story & followed the link I forgot to save it as a book mark and was googling variations on wika, wiki, wikia search . I think wikisearch can be abbreviated as wikis - thanks justicerulesok

The name WikiSearch is already taken by another Wikia project. Charm 20:21, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
That's a shame, as WikiSearch is the obvious name. I read now that 'Wikiseek (called Wikisearch during its beta phase) is a search engine that searches Wikipedia and all sites that are linked to from Wikipedia' so isn't Wikisearch available now?[1] --Flexdream 12:15, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Eureka

Well known exclamation of Archimedes most often assumed "as I have found it!"

"Heureka" is the 1st person singular perfect indicative active of the Greek verb heuriskein, (Greek εὑρίσκειν) meaning "to find"; it means "I have found it!", or more accurately, "I am in a state of having found it". As a result, "Eureka!" has become an interjection which is used to celebrate a discovery (whether a major scientific truth or something as minor as the finding of a lost item). A "eureka step" is the step in a proof that cracks the problem and paves the way to the solution. (taken from wikipedia) 213.52.234.202 19:53, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

There's already a search engine called Eureka:http://www.gocee.com/eureka/ --Dancrumb 21:12, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Endeavour

Sorry for not putting this proposal in the time order, and sorry for my bad Englisch (I speak German). I think "Eureka" is a good idea, because it works international, it's short, simple, evident an easy to remember. But as we see above, that name is not available somehow. I also think, "Wiki-"combinations aren't convincing at all, because it comes rather like chomping the same old chewing gum again and again. So I would suggest "Endeavour", not mainly because it is functional, but because it sounds good, because of the suggestive effect and because of the emotional impact this name has, at least on me. --C. Bastian 04:28, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikiearch

Wikiearch is the name I propose. I derived it, needless to say by joining Wiki and Search (removing S). But I like it. Srinivasasha 11:59, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

As I informed myself from different and - may be - not totally independant sources the new search engine enterprise _wikisari_ is a commercial _fun_ adventure: The European variant of such a new search engine project supported by France, Germany and Spain named "_QUIERO_"[QUEST] was just quitted by Germany at the last day of the year 2006 with a definit end to further funding of this European search engine variant[seen as a pure substitute to Google]. Germany's leave of "Quiero" has a long pre-history of official ranking attempts by statehood clerks - authoritarian interferences with the superdemocracy of the web(especially government funded image-prestige and window-dressing exclusive attempts - by bribes, especially university-scholar favouritisme and other forms of corruption [compare please the struggle in Germany about the replacement of the different Federal Prussian Academies by ONE unique National Academy(battle to get a higher payroll for the same persons)], suddenly("the corruption was evident" SIC!) Germany and the Scandinavian countries didn't wanted funding anymore. The W3C = w3c[water closet of Berner-Lee in Freiburg[Üechtland(Swiss-Jewish commercial gang]] community introduced several 10'000 drug-stores[what is for a silly good old European an "APOTHEKA( = "over_the_desk-shop" ) with a totally different and honest sound ) for Jewish-Christian commercial aims in their official files and not to forget and to mention too the 10'000 patented _§$_ originally African and furthermore Feizer/Merck-owned or Adventis-owned $§ herbal plants["fauna and flora"] and genome_files-search-criterias of the U.S. National Academy of Science, which were recently included under the different subsections of W3C with a bizz-point of view only. This was a DARPA leaded & DoD-leaded search engine project which now goes commercial with sub-contractors like Jewish-Christian security enterprises for the pseudo-parliament in Baghdad like C_a_r_gyle and Halliburton[Cheney] ... .You already understood: The reality[christian science]is nowadays more fun than any invented joke. The absurdity of such search engine endeavors is, that public institutions [ = the state which equals Leviathan] want our money by brute force that we rank those statehood personal lobbies, administrations and nomenclaturas, bureaucrats and great "egos" on the top of each search engine and this - whenever possible - worldwide. This should not the definit idea and hierarchy or classification criteria of our web search engine. A search engine should show faireness that those who are worldwide on the top in the web rankings gained this results by robbing our finances. Their top-down presentations are absurd like the categorizations of plants and flowers or trees or bushes where the "maquis of Texas" is above all. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 84.73.113.30 (talkcontribs) 13:00, 1 January 2007.

Did you mean Quaero? Anyway, you're statement seems senseless to me. MovGP0 17:38, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

As the great German scientist and teacher Prof. Dr. User:MovGP0|MovGP0 on wikipedia well documented has User:MovGP0|MovGP0 the mathematical standard of a _Jewish_ _undergraduate_ _at_ _most_ and he seems to assume that I wanted to give away any knowledge[His merits are more in pedagogics and electronic dogmatics and furthermore in the redundant didactical and totally superficial skills[compare please to this topic Mr. Berner-Lee and W3C] as for example if he[Prof. Dr. User:MovGP0|MovGP0] askes me about the orthographical correctness of the European search engine as an alias]. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 84.73.113.30 (talkcontribs).

This was a senseless entry too. MovGP0 18:38, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

I think this one is too hard to spell and pronounce. --Brilliand 01:58, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

I see already jokes about the "Wikiarche" (Wiki+Arche) running in Germany. Arche = Ark (yeah, it means THE ark (of the covenant)). Another variation would be Wikiarsch (Wiki Arsch). Arsch = Ass in German. Adding the "e" for Wikie would not make a difference, since in the German language "i" and "ie" are pronounced virtually the same, if used at the end of a word. That is different, if used in the middle of a word. In that case is the "e" emphasised and makes "Wikiearch" impossible to pronounce unless it is broken down and the mentioned variations would come to mind automatically (it took me 2 seconds, without intending it). --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 19:10, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Esprit Search

es·prit de corps
a sense of unity and of common interests and responsibilities, as developed among a group of persons closely associated in a task, cause, enterprise, etc.1
1esprit de corps. Dictionary.com. Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1). Random House, Inc. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/esprit%20de%20corps (accessed: January 02, 2007).

I think this name communicates the collaborative nature of the project, while being catchy and cool. Per Verisign, espritsearch.com is available. So is espiritsearch.com if we want to register that too in case people misspell the address. (esprit.com is taken.) Charm 08:08, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mowsee

Simplification of My OWn SEarch Engine

Seems to mean mouse in german, (you see the relation ? a little mouse that search in every corner for you), seems to be people of Burkina Faso too( relation with Chuck Norris thought). It s easy to say and could be a human name/nickname. As you want --Nin' 18:20, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WikiSeek

As a reference to old search engines like Infoseek or ExactSeek. Seek also states the purpose of the site. --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 09:04, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

It's used already by the Search Wikia project[2], so make it the official one. --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 09:30, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Seek-o-pedia / SeekOpedia

Seek + Encyclopedia (or Wikipedia) = Seekopedia --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 09:04, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Please remember that Search Wikia has no affiliation whatsoever with Wikipedia. -Mschel 11:36, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
But it is based on Wikipedia (driven off the contributions to Wikipedia), isn't it? The former Wikiasari beta was at least. If the new version is doing the same, an association with Wikipedia would be a good thing. This has nothing to do with Wikipedia and Wikia being separate legal entities. The change from "ZIP" to "WINZIP" for example did not implied that WINZIP is a Microsoft product, but it indicated the association with Microsoft Windows. My two cents. --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 18:56, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
No it is not. It is not related to Wikipedia in any way shape or form. For the sake of this project, just pretend wikipedia does not exist. --Mschel 14:29, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AskThePeople

Something completely different. Wikipedia is the attempt to create an encyclopedia of all human knowledge created by the people themselves. That means that the answers coming from the search engine are coming from the people. There are other words and phrases like "human knowledge", "everybody" and "people", which could be used. It's a suggestion to spark further ideas for names that follow the same concept. --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 09:04, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] TellMeAbout ...

Simple and straight forward.. Tell me about ... whatever, it's not Encyclopaedia Britannica with its limited subjects. Search for "ascii art" at britannica.com = "Sorry, we were unable to find results for your search.". Now try the same at Wikipedia :) --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 09:13, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Codename needed

There's a little confusion. A name is needed, at least, a codename like "Project WK" to help people and media to name it. Anyway, the final name will be the best. I agree with the fact that a very good branding opportunity could be lost (if it is not yet!) If there is no name, people and media will take for good the first they finde (like Wikiasari) and once a big media company like The Times has refered to the project like that, everybody follows it.

Congrats and good luck from Spain. 213.4.128.45 11:53, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

I think naming after geographical places (Intel/AMD does), firstnames (Tornados), pets, flowers/trees, dinosaurs, starsigns, gods, figures in a comic/TV show (Debian does), coktails/wines, etc. are good codenames.
The first letters could get used as numbering scheme so for the geeks it is easier to map the codename to the version. ie. Versions till 1.0 could get called "Aacheno"; Version 2.0 gets called "Bactro" and so on. (see: List of Dinosaurs)
MovGP0 10:41, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Might I suggest Codename Aurora?--80.213.34.233 18:10, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Astronomical Phenomenons might also be ok. But you might think also on a kind of numbering for further releases. Possible would be ie.:
  • Black Hole; Bow shock
  • Culmination
  • Dyson sphere; Deep sky
  • Extinction (Eclipse is already taken)
  • Fermi glow
  • Glowworm
  • etc.
Anyway, I think Aurora is very overused, so I would't take it. (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurora)
MovGP0 21:09, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

I agree a project needs a name and if Wikiasari cannot be used (personal opinion Wikiasari is the name the press know the project, there is branding in this as some have mentioned... 4 mil hits, if poss maybe keep it, by the way it also means Clam Fish in Japanese), else how about Wikitakara staying with the Japanese theme takara means treasure. I would add that maybe any project name is temporary before someone goes off and domain name steals it. Perhaps the final name should be selected by a secret ballot to stop this. Ashc 19:35, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hawaii, lead the way

I wonder what the Hawaiian word for 'find' is... Chadlupkes 20:03, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

  • kokua - help, cooperation
  • kupono - Honest, proper, appropriate
  • Loa'a - find
  • kahua - location
Agree, ie. wikiloa seems to be a very good name in my opinion. — MovGP0 11:52, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
Agree with Hawaii idea. Wikupono?
I agree with Wikupono. Or Wikikahua would be cool, too.

[edit] Chuck Norris says, Steal a really neat African word from the GNU/Linux community!

That is to say, I'm proposing Wikubuntu.
