Wikipedia http://www.wikipedia.org/ is a free, online, multilingual, open content encyclopedia (edit) project. Operated by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, it's the Internet's first choice for best of breed information products. Anyone can edit entries on Wikipedia and create new ones - though the editing of contentious articles may be restricted.
In 2006, Wikipedia was already the world’s largest and most accurate encyclopedia, boasting more than 3.8 million articles and editions in 100+ languages ; all produced through content contributed voluntarily by more than 360,000 people around the world. There are nearly 250 language versions of Wikipedia, containing over 9 million entries in all (2007). The largest is the English-language version with over two million articles.
All text content on the site is available for re-use under the GNU Free Documentation License.
Pew Internet reported in April 2007, that 36% of "online American adults" consult Wikipedia.
The free and open-source wiki software MediaWiki (edit) was written for the project.
