[edit] Aspects of Quality

What level of quality should Wikia Search be aiming for? What is "Quality"? The meaning of "Quality" is particularly diverse, depending on the context. The quality of each component of the search pipeline influences the quality of the whole.

  • General (applies to all components)
    • User Experience (pleasant? useful?)
    • Reliability of the site
    • Frequency of encountering issues, Whether the site works at all, freedom from bugs
  • Search Engine
    • Quality of search results (relevance, coverage, no dead links)
  • Wiki
    • Mini articles (relevance, readability, truth, verifiability)

[edit] Index Quality

  • Should Index selection be available from the start?
  • What should be the sourced for index starting points? (Open Directory?)
  • What frequency should we monitor Zero Hit queries with and what should be done baout Zero Hit keywords?

[edit] Algorithmic Quality

  • What should be weighted in our algorithm? Newness? Links? Nearness? Frequency?
  • Should we allow editorial tweaking of algorithmic weights and their balances??

[edit] Result View Quality

  • Should we display graphical previews of pages in thumbnails?
  • Should we use pagination?
  • Should we display result from some sources more prominently than other sources? Which Sources?

[edit] User Feedback Quality

  • Should users be allowed to affect ranking by a feedback loop?

[edit] Wiki Quality

  • Should the mini articles be true?
  • Should the mini articles be verifiable? (Note that Wikipedia, for example, aims for verifiability, not truth.)
  • Syntactic correctness
  • Who is responsible for the mini article's quality? The users, of course.

We already do know the answer to this question:

  • Should the mini articles' subjects be notable? No.
